Formation of Adjectives for Comparison
तुलनावाचक विशेषण कैसे बनते हैं?

Rule 1:
In most cases, comparative form is made by adding er to the positive form, while the superlative form is made by adding est to the positive form.
अधिकांश adjectives के positive रूप में er बढ़ाने से comparative रूप बन जाता है और positive रूप में ही est बढ़ाने से superlative रूप तैयार हो जाता है.

Positive Comparative Superlative
strong stronger strongest
sweet sweeter sweetest
small smaller smallest
tall taller tallest
bold bolder boldest
Rule 2:
When the positive for of the word ends with e, then on r and st are added to form the comparative and superlative forms respectively.
जब positive के अन्त में e होता है तो comparative के लिए केवल r और superlative के लिए केवल st जुड़ेगा.

Positive Comparative Superlative
fine finer finest
large larger largest
wise wiser wisest

Rule 3:
When the positive form of the word ends with y, then the y is replaced with an i before adding er and est to form the comparative and superlative forms respectively.
यदि positive के अन्त में y हो और y से पहले consonant हो तो y के स्थान पर i हो जायेगा फिर er या est लगेगा.

Positive Comparative Superlative
happy happier happiest
easy easier easiest
wealthy wealthier wealthiest

Rule 4:
When the positive form of the word is a mono-syllable that ends with a consonant and has a short vowel as the second last letter, then the consonant is doubled before adding er and est to form the comparative and superlative forms respectively.
यदि positive में केवल एक syllable हो और उसके अन्त में केवल एक ही consonant हो; और उस consonant के पहले short vowel हो, तो er और est बढ़ाने से पहले consonant को double कर देते हैं.

Positive Comparative Superlative
red redder reddest
big bigger biggest
fat fatter fattest

Rule 5:
There are also some irregular adjectives, whose comparative and superlative forms completely different from the positive form, like...
कुछ ऐसे adjectives भी हैं जिनकी तुलना अनियमित है. इनके comparative और superlative रूप को positive से नहीं बनाया जा सकता है, जैसे...

good better best
bad worse worst

far farther farthest
further furthest
late later latest

Rule 6:
For adjectives that are of more than 2 syllables, the comparative degree is formed by preceding it with more, while its superlative is formed by preceding it with most.
2 syllables से अधिक वाले adjectives को comparative रूप देने के लिये उनके पहले more लगाया जाता है, और superlative रूप को लिये उनके पहले most लगाया जाता है, जैसे...

Positive Comparative Superlative
beautiful more beautiful most beautiful
courageous more courageous most courageous
proper more proper most proper

Rule 7:
The er form of comparative is not used when two adjectives for the same noun are compared.
जब एक ही संज्ञा की दो विशेषताओं के बीच तुलना की जाती है तब comparative बनाने के लिये er नहीं किया जाता, जैसे...

Same noun Ramesh is more big than strong.
Different nouns Ramesh is bigger than Jayesh.

Rule 8:
Care has to be taken to ensure when comparing two objects, that the latter excludes the former, i.e. the two objects should not end up comparing themselves with the other.
यह अवश्य ध्यान रखें कि जिन दो वस्तुओं की तुलना की जा रही है वे आपस में एक दूसरे की तुलना न करें, जैसे...

Right This boy, Ramesh, is bigger than other boys.
Wrong This boy, Ramesh, is bigger than boys.

Ramesh is also a boy, so it would be wrong to say that he is bigger than all boys. We can certainly say, that he is bigger than the other boys.
Ramesh भी तो एक लड़का है, तो यह कहना गलत होगा कि वह सब लड़कों से बड़ा है. हाँ, यह कह सकते हैं कि वह बाकी के लड़कों से बड़ा है.
